The Wake-Up Call

A few days ago my hosting provider sent me a friendly message: “Warning: 500 emails have just been sent by your account.” Not what you want to read on a Saturday evening.

My first thought: someone dropped a PHP shell on my WordPress blog and is using it as a spam cannon. I renamed PHPMailer as an emergency brake and started digging.

What It Actually Was

The good news: no shell. WordPress core and all plugins passed their checksum checks, and there were no unknown admin logins. The culprit was my own security plugin. Wordfence was blocking a brute-force wave of about 500 login attempts, and it was configured to send me an email for every single block, with no hourly limit. So the security plugin did its job and still got me an abuse warning.

If you manage Windows updates through WSUS, you’ve probably been there: a server is missing patches, you dig into it, and it turns out the product category was never enabled in WSUS. No warning, no report - it just silently never synced those updates.

The frustrating part is that WSUS has no built-in way to tell you which product categories your clients actually need. You can see what’s subscribed, but not what you’re missing. It doesn’t know what’s installed on your clients unless you’ve already told it to care.

I was using tailscale + vaultwarden before but I don’t want to use a VPN connection to access my passwords. But I do want a client certificate for extra security.

I have a custom operating system with the name KompassOS (www.kompassos.nl) and sometimes we need to upload big ISO files to cloudflare. But if the files all the files bigger than 300MB you have to upload with the S3 API.

So Need to upload large files (>300MB) to Cloudflare R2? Here’s how to do it with a single rclone command without creating config files.

Prerequisites

Create an R2 bucket in your Cloudflare dashboard
Generate API credentials in Cloudflare R2 → Manage R2 API Tokens
Install rclone

The Command

rclone copy ./your-file.iso ':s3,provider=Cloudflare,access_key_id=YOUR_ACCESS_KEY,secret_access_key=YOUR_SECRET_KEY,endpoint=YOUR_ACCOUNT_ID.r2.cloudflarestorage.com,no_check_bucket=true,force_path_style=true:your-bucket/'

Key Parameters

provider=Cloudflare - Tells rclone to use R2-specific settings
no_check_bucket=true - Prevents bucket creation attempts (avoids 403 errors)
force_path_style=true - Ensures compatibility with R2’s API
Replace YOUR_ACCOUNT_ID with your Cloudflare account ID
Replace YOUR_ACCESS_KEY and YOUR_SECRET_KEY with your R2 credentials
Replace your-bucket with your bucket name

Why This Works

Regular file uploads in web interfaces are limited to 300MB. This method uses rclone’s multipart upload capability, allowing files of any size to be uploaded directly to R2 storage.

But you can also have an system_server battery drain. With some easy debug steps you can find the root cause of this drain.

First install ADB
Put your phone in development mode
Start “adb shell”
Start “top”

If you have an high system_server CPU than check the PID.

Note: In my screenshot it is already fixed. But this was 30~35% CPU

I’ll was getting this issue when I try to install BetterBatteryStats on my Oneplus device.

There are 3 things to do if you want to fix this:

Enable Developer mode
Disable Permission Monitoring (dutch: Machtigingscontrole uitschakelen). You can find this setting in the debugger options somewhere near the bottom.
You need to force quit the batteryBatteryStats app (or reboot the phone)

Then you can set the permissions:

To automate some tasks with PowerShell on a website you sometimes need to log in. Today I tried some curl and postman tricks but it isn’t hard if you know what to script with PowerShell and bypass all other tools.

First, find a website to log in to, then check the page source and what the submit button does. In this example, it is “Inloggen” (dutch for login).

Then start the developer tools (F12), select the network tab, enter the credentials and login.

There is an easy way to use the The Onion Router for any command under linux

First install TOR and proxychains4

$ sudo apt install tor proxychains4

You can configure proxychains.conf but the default config is good :)

$ sudo nano /etc/proxychains.conf

Then start the tor service

$ sudo systemctl start tor

And check your ip:

$ proxychains4 curl ifconfig.me

You can use any command you want. So if you want your firefox browser over tor:

My use case for a customer was to configure WSUS for a couple of DMZ servers. The DMZ servers are not domain-joined. So I create a PowerShell script to configure the registry so I can easily deploy the settings to the servers.

You can use this script also for non domain-joined servers

Powershell better tab autocomplete

With Powershell ISE you can use CTRL + SPACE for auto completion.

But when you work in a native Powershell window you don’t have this option. And many often you cycle with tab completion trough the powershell and because you press the TAB button too soon you have to remove characters and cycle again trough all the commands.

Unit now ;-)

There is an easy fix you can implement so the Powershell have the same auto completion like bash.

Repair Debian boot after Windows update

Today I update my dual boot system and unfortunately my Debian OS wasn’t booting anymore. The root cause was that Windows decide to reclaim the EFI boot.

The fix is quite easy.

Type mountvol P: /S

Check the EFI boot partition data

And fix your boot the this command:

bcdedit.exe /set {bootmgr} path \EFI\Debian\grubx64.efi

As you can see in the screenshot, this also work for EndeavourOS and Ubuntu and probably for a lot other Linux EFI boot systems.

Pfff I’ve had a battery drain for weeks on my Oneplus device (you know that your phone battery drains faster than you would expect). But that drain was not visible in the android battery overview.

I had already installed an app (betterbattrystats) that give you more information about the drain. With betterbatterystats I found out that logd could be the issue, but logd is a log service so it should not be a root cause.

I had to check my DHCP configuration for a Dell Wyse Thin Client. But when you configure specific options like 161 and 162 you don’t see that options in a Wireshark capture during a Windows DHCP request.

But what you can do is capture data data with netsh, copy the data to your workstation, convert the data so you can read it with wireshark and do you thing.

For me, this was a pain in the ass for a long time. When I connect to a Windows server through RDP/RDS it sometimes takes more than 2 minutes to connect to a server. Today after some waiting, and waiting and some more waiting I did a deep dive with Wireshark to figure out why it was so slow.

My setup

I know for sure the issue should be in my setup. Because when I connect first to a jump host (RDP) and then connect to other domain-joined servers everything was connected almost immediately after I put in my user credentials.

Fix Screen Tearing in Linux

It cost me a lot of time to troubleshoot the screen tearing. So I want to share my solution for everyone with the same frustrating tearing issues. My private setup is a Lenovo Ideapad (gaming) with Nvidia and Intel (Prime) GPU. I use the laptop screen and an external 24" HDMI display.

Install Pihole on Synology with docker

Unfortunately, there isn’t a pihole addon in the Synology package center. But you can build your pihole in a docker container instead :)

The reason you must use docker-compose instead of the Synology docker package itself is that you want to bridge net NIC of your Synology and place the pihole direct in your network. You cannot do this with the GUI.

The steps:

Install docker with the package center
Activate SSH
Download de image pihole/pihole:latest
Login with ssh
type vi docker-compose.yaml
Paste the content from the docker-compose.yaml example into the vi
Change the IP adressen to your own network
Type :wr to save the file
Type :q to quit vi
Type “sudo docker-compose up”

When you want to update the docker container, all you have to do is:

So I configure a “configure automatic updates” policy for testing purposes but the auto-update and installation won’t work. The main cause….? Lack of patience ;-)

How this Policy works (source):

The Windows Update Agent periodically checks the WSUS server for updates. Updates it finds, it reports state for: Installed, Not Installed, Not Applicable. If a “Not Installed” update is approved and available, the WUA queues the installation files for download if the Configure Automatic Updates policy is set to AUOption ‘3’ or ‘4’.

My web hosting company don’t support subdomain SSL certificates. And because Google’s Chrome in July is required HTTPS on all websites (otherwise you get an error your website isn’t safe) I had some deadline to make my blog HTTPS. Cloudflare is a nice reverse proxy solution and the basic plan is free to use also.

So what I did was create a cloudflare account and put my website behind it. After I did that I forced the HTTPS and voila my website was HTTPS. The steps you must take.

Microsoft uses .local as the recommended root of internal domains, and serves them via unicast dns. Linux uses .local as the root of multicast dns. If you’re stuck on a broken MS network like this, reconfigure your linux multicast DNS to use a different domain like .alocal.

To do this, add a domain-name=.alocal line to the [server] section of /etc/avahi/avahi-daemon.conf, then restart avahi-daemon: sudo service avahi-daemon restart.

First backup your transaction logging:

Tasks > Backup
Select transactionlog backup en select a disk where to backup
Now check the status with DBCC LOGINFO(DATABASENAME)
Check if the last status record is 0 (zero)
When the status is 2 make another backup
When the status is 0 you can run: DBCC SHRINKFILE(2)

Create a strong self-signed certificate for multiple years

If you follow these steps you can create a self signed certificate with the following specifications:

Wildcard certificate
SHA256 hash
10 years
2048 bits public key
Client and server verification
Sha1 fingerprint

Be aware that self-signed certificates can manipulate by a man-in-the-middle. You should not use this in critical production environments.

Please use windows 10 powershell in admin mode. Otherwise you will get errors

Run cmd > cleanmgr and remove all the nasty update files!

After I cleaned up the server I had to stop the windows installer service (trustedinstaller.exe) to remove the c:\windows\logs\cbs\CBS.log (6GB file) manually. Maybe a restart of the server do the same but I cannot test it on a production environment.

I’ve created a batch file which find out what was hanging my .NET application.

Fix Intel SSD 320 problem on a Macbook

From one day to another my Intel 320 SSD was not visible anymore. So I download Ubuntu 14.04 boot it and start gparted. Then I saw no SSD disk in my disk selection :(

So I download the Intel firmware tool and boot it and then I get a BAD_CTX and a disk with 0GB :(

After some google’ing on the BAD_CTX I saw this was an known issue. The only way to fix this was completely secure erase your disk and so all your data on the disk is gone ARRRRGGGGG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Cause

I have resolved the issue, to solve this, we have to go into Active Directory Users and Computers. Under View, select Advanced Features. Now, under the /Microsoft Exchange System Objects folder, manually delete the Correspondance 81807753 object.

Clone HP ThinState Capture USB stick (or any other USB disk)

The ThinState USB disk is split into 2 partitions. And the second partition isn’t accessible in Windows so it was very hard to build a stick from scratch. There are a lot of Windows USB clone tools but because I had to clone the ThinState 16GB to a 8GB stick also, it was impossible to do it from my windows workstation. But when some things get more difficulty what do you do? Use Linux :)

I had 2x HP DL 380 G6 servers with Windows 2012 R2 whit the same problem. When I start a download (I try a lot of different sites) the download drops and fluctuate. When I connect my laptop or another server on the same cable the download is stable. So my conclusion was the onboard nic.

What I tried:

Update latest HP SSP (2014_2)
Update firmware NIC
Update driver NIC
Update Windows (patches)
change all the default nic settings like disable tcp offload for example
Try another switch

When you have too many events in your zenoss environment the zenoss webinterface will be very sloooooooow. And you get all kind of errors:

When you start top you see alot of java executables when you click on the Infrastructure zenoss button. Java sometimes take 350% CPU.

When you run Acronis version 10 on a Windows 2008 R2 you get the error “0xc0000225 - Boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessible.

To fix this problem:

Boot Windows 2008 R2 CD
Select repair
Run command line
Now run these commands

Bootrec /fixmbr Bootrec /fixboot Bootrec /rebuildbcd

Reboot the server and your windows is running again.

I have an HP 6560b laptop with windows 8 installed. But HP driver support for Windows 8 is very very bad… I don’t go too deep in to de details but the network driver, video driver, auto-update software (HPSoftpaq) and hardware support and sucks big time :X

I bought a bluetooth speaker but the HP wireless assistant isn’t available for windows 8 so you can’t enable bluetooth. What you must do to get this working is reboot your laptop, press F10, and reset your BIOS to default.

This is a HOWTO for installing VMware Tools on Centos 6.x.

Update your system so the kernel headers/devel will match your system:

yum update

Install the VMware tools prerequisites:

yum install make gcc kernel-devel kernel-headers glibc-headers perl

Reboot the server:

shutdown -r now

Mount the VMware Tools CD (after inserting it into the VM)

mkdir /media/cdrom
mount /dev/cdrom /media/cdrom

Copy the install bundle from the CD and extract it.

cp /media/cdrom/VMware-Tools*.tar.gz /root
cd /root
tar xvfz VMwareTools*.tar.gz

Sometimes when a LUN is full a VM cannot shutdown properly

Make a SSH connection to the host where the VM running at
Login as root
list all running VM’s

# vmware-cmd -l

Get the current state

# vmware-cmd /vmfs/volumes/<UUID>/<VMDIR>/<VMNAME>.vmx getstate

Now you know for sure the status is stuck you can kill the VM

Wait 30 seconds and try a getstate again:

#kill -9 3093

Wait 30 seconds and see the state is “off” now.

If the state is still “stuck” migrate all VM’s to another host en reboot the host.

Best way to clean malware, rootkits, trojans and virusses (I call it malware from now on) is to backup your data, scan your data with another computer, remove your partition, reinstall Windows, install a virusscanner, update your Windows and put you data back. This is the safest method and I allways recommend this to people.

By default the Roaming profile is only accessible for the owner (end-user) and the system account. I found a post on the internet with a workaround to access the profile without problems to the end user.

Using two tools, the first is SubInAcl.exe available from Microsoft (download), and the second is cacls.exe which you should already have by default in Windows.

These first two commands will give the local administrators group ownership of the user’s folder and everything underneath. NOTE: This will not change any existing permissions.

XBMC (XBMCBuntu) ContextMenu option Logitech Harmony

With my Logitech Harmony 300 I didn’t have the ContextMenu (right click or c keyboard) option. This action is essential when you want to change some movie information. If I use my XBMC Android app I had the title (= ContextMenu) option so I thought that it must be possible do the same with my logitech harmony. After some searching and debugging I find a solution.

The steps:

login to your xbmc with ssh xbmc@IPXBMC
cp /usr/share/xbmc/system/keymaps/keyboard.xml /home/xbmc/.xbmc/userdata/keymaps/keyboard.xml(never hack the original file, that can be overwritten when you do an update)
nano /home/xbmc/.xbmc/userdata/keymaps/keyboard.xml
Add this line between the other keyboard shurtcuts ContextMenu
Save the file (CTRL + W) and restart your xbmc to reload the keyboard.xml config

Today I found a very nice cross platform Paint.NET program clone with the name Pinta.

Now I can edit images on every platform (OSX, Linux & Windows) and use always the same interface and hotkeys for the few times a year I need a simple paint prgram.

When you install the software under windows do not forget to install the “Gtk# for Windows”. Without the GTK the program don’t start and don’t give any error.

virtual ethernet card network adapter 1 is not supported

I had the “error virtual ethernet card network adapter 1 is not supported” on a 64 bit Linux (ubuntu) virtual machine.
To fix this problem I shutdown the virtual machine, removed the NIC and add a new E1000 network card. Then I boot the server even everything was fine :)

When you access the reporting services over SSL you can have the problem that the reporting services GUI under IE is very slow.
The solution is quite simple: Login with the servername or domain name. E.g: SERVERNAME\username

XBMCBuntu boot problem when TV is turned off (Nvidia)

When I boot my XBMC box and don’t turn my TV on before the boot XBMC was not succesfully. After some digging and googling I found the solution.

On your XBMCBuntu device press ALT+CRTL+F1
login with user xbmc, pass xbmc
type sudo su -
type killall Xorg
press ALT+CRTL+F7
login with user xbmc, pass xbmc and select XBMCBuntu
Now press the button on the left bottom (or press the windows/command key)
Select System Tools > Nvidia X Server Settings
click on DFP-0, DFP-1 or whatever then click “Acquire EDID..”
Save it as edid.bin in your /home/xbmc/ folder
Now make an ssh connection from another PC to your XBMC box
Example linux/osx: ssh 192.168.1.12 -l xbmc for windows try putty
Make yourself root sudo su -
Password xbmc
Type: cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep “Assigned Display Device: DFP-”
Keep the DFP-X number in mind
Make a backup of your X.org config cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.orig
open the xorg.conf nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Delete all the lines with ctrl+k(multiple times)

Today my mother calls me that she had some battery drain issue’s on her HTC Desire Android phone. Because she had an older stock ROM not all battery and cpu options where available. After some phone troubleshooting I found the cause.

First go the the android marked and download the app: Quick System Info Pro.
Start the app scroll down a little and press battery
The press Battery History
Press Other Usage  and press CPU usage
Now you can see the program who sucks the live of your battery

If you get the error \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM missing or corrupt you can follow these steps to fix this problem:


Boot a linux distribution of your choice. I prefer Ubuntu
Mount your windows partition
If exist rename (or move) the corrupt file \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM to \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM.old
Now open the folder “system volume information\restore (with some numbers)\RP (with a number)\snapshot.
Copy the file _REGISTRY_MACHINE_SYSTEM to \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\_REGISTRY_MACHINE_SYSTEM
Rename \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\_REGISTRY_MACHINE_SYSTEM to \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM
Restart the computer and you will see Windows is starting again :)
Now point to start > programs > accessories > system tools > system restore
Restore your windows a couple of days earlier

If you don’t restore you windows you must manually fix the file permissions. Everything looks fine but if you see your event viewer you see a lot of (networking) profile troubles.

There is a very nice GUI tool to troubeshoot webinject scripts. You can download the tool @ http://www.webinject.org/download.html for Windows and Linux.
After you extract or install the tool you can change the globalhttplog line in the config.xml file to: yes so you get the full debug log.
Note: I found a small memory bug in the GUI when you use the parseresponse parameter in your scripts. To workaround this issue the best you can do is restart the tool (file > restart) before you test the scripts.

Open Terminal.


Open InfoPlist.strings file using vi text editor as a root.
sudo vi /System/Library/CoreServices/Finder.app/Contents/Resources/English.lproj/InfoPlist.strings
(change English.lproj to your language)


Find below line:

Do following change (by adding space before " Folder" word after equal sign).

Save the InfoPlist.strings file by press [esc], type wq (mean write and quit vi) then press [return].


Close Terminal


Restart your Finder, right click on Finder icon while pressing the key[option] and select Relaunch your Finder.

I had some troubles with the Android SDK so I will explain the steps you must take to connect your phone from your pc
Preparation:

Download the Android SDK
Turn on your USB debugging mode (On the device, go to the home screen, press MENU, select Applications > Development, then enable USB debugging)

Steps:

Install the Android SDK
During the install ask to download and install the Java SDK
Continue the installation when you have installed the Java SDK
Start the (Android) SDK Manager and download all the default packages. Note: when you start the SDK Manager in the future always start the shortcut with administrator permissions. (right click > runas admin)
Now download the USB drivers with the SDK Manager

I had to renew an expired self signed SSL certificate that i have on Exchange 2007 box today, and found the SSL clone trick interesting and did the job for me. So here’s the howto:
Using the Exchange Management Shell run the following commands:

Get-ExchangeCertificate -DomainName server.yourdomain.com (copy the thumbprint of the expired SSL)
Get-ExchangeCertificate -Thumbprint  | New-ExchangeCertificate
Now you can go to IIS and select your new created SSL certificate (this SSL have the same name as the old SSL one)

How to Setup a Windows 2008 R2 SNTP/NTP Server

When configured correctly, you can use the Windows Time (W32Time) service as an SNTP/NTP server for both windows and non-windows SNTP/NTP clients.
Here’s how to do it:


Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.


Locate and then click the following registry entry:

In the right pane, right-click AnnounceFlags, and then click Modify.

Go to Settings>Applications>Manage Applications. Find HTC Sense and click on it.
scroll down a bit…you should see a button about restoring default…click that.
hitting home after this will present you with a menu of both launcher pro and Sense.
pick launcher pro…click the check box for default…and you’re done!


Netstumbler alternative / Wireless Scanning

The tool netstumbler is very nice but work only on Windows XP. If you have enough on some basic scanning you can use the following netsh command:

netsh wlan show networks mode=bssid

If you need some extra info you can use the tool InSSIDer.

When you get the RDP error “a revocation check could not be performed for the certificate” on a windows 7 workstation after you installed an SSL from a certification, you must disable enablecredsspsupport support. You can do this in the RDP file you are using. Open the *.rdp file in notepad and add the following line:

You can only run sysprep twice. If you get an error the 3rd time follow these steps to fix it:

1.     Change the following Registry key value of GeneralizationState to 7.
HKLM\System\Setup\Status\SysprepStatus
2.     Run ‘msdtc -uninstall’ and ‘msdtc -install’ to repair the DTC installation.
3.     Then re-run sysprep again and see if the issue is resolved.



Exchange 2007 – Out-of-Office / Autodiscover troubleshooting

If you have some trouble with Out-of-Office / Autodiscover  Exchange try the following to fix the problems:
 Remove Autodiscover and EWS virtual directories from the default website with the following commands

Remove-WebServicesVirtualDirectory
Remove-AutodiscoverVirtualDirectory

If you can’t remove them because of some error use the metebase explorer (google) and follow these steps:

1. Install it on your Exchange Server
2. Run it as Administrator
3. Browse to Wssv –> 1 –> Root –> Autodiscover
4. Dont delete it first, rename it to whatever…
5. Check Metabase Explorer and IIS Management to make sure your new Autodiscover Application is listed.
6.  Delete old renamed directory in Metabase explorer…

Overview of Print Spooler Component
Print Processor
The print processor tells the spooler to alter a job according to the document data type. It works together with the printer driver to move the spooled print jobs from the hard disk drive to the printer.
Print Monitor
The print monitors are the name of any component that processes the print job after it has spooled and are responsible for directing the output to the print device. Print monitors can be divided into two classes:

Language monitors
Port monitors

Language monitors are typically used only for bi-directional printers. A bi-directional printer
Supports two-way communication to answer status, and configurations questions sent to it. A
Bi-directional printer can also give unsolicited status information about the job being printed,
and error conditions such as paper out.
Port monitors consist of user-mode DLLs. They are responsible for providing a     communications    path between the user-mode print spooler and the kernel-mode port drivers that access I/O port hardware.
Print Spooler crash happens most of the time due to third party print processor and print monitor. We can set printers to use default print processor and monitor by machine changes in the registry called as Print hive cleaning
Note that all of the changes described in this section will take effect when the Print Spooler service is restarted.
Confirm the default Local Print Provider

Use Regedit to locate the Print key in the Registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print


Click to highlight the Print key in Regedit and export the key as a .reg file for backup purposes (File > Export).


Locate the Local Port Registry key:


HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Monitors\Local Port

Confirm that the Driver value in the Local Port Registry key is set to Localspl.dll. If it is not, double-click the Driver value to edit the Data String and set it to Localspl.dll.

Remove 3rd Party Port and Language Monitors

Note any 3rd-party Monitors that are listed in the Monitors Registry key for future reference:

The default Monitors are:

The 2 types of monitors that may be listed here are Port Monitors and/or Language Monitors. As a general rule, Language Monitors will not have any printer ports defined in the Ports subkey and may be removed without causing a problem. Port Monitors such as HP Standard TCP/IP, however, may have active printers using this port type. If a 3rd-party Port Monitor is in use, with printers defined in the Ports subkey under the Port Monitor, you will need to convert the port(s) to a Standard TCP/IP Port ( Standard Port Monitor).

To convert the printer ports from the 3rd-party Port Monitor to Standard TCP/IP Port Monitor, perform the following steps:

Open the Printers and Faxes folder.


Right-click the printer that was identified as using the 3rd-party Port Monitor and select Properties.


In the Properties for the printer, click the Ports tab.


On the Ports tab, click the Add Port button.


In the Printer Ports dialog, select Standard TCP/IP and click the New Port button to start the Add Standard TCP/IP Printer Port Wizard.


Click Next when the Add Standard TCP/IP Printer Port Wizard starts to specify the printer that will be using this new port.


Enter the Printer Name or IP Address for the printer that will be using this new port and click Next.


Note: The wizard automatically fills in the port name for you in the Port Name box. You can either accept this name or type the name that you want to use, and then click Next. Standard Port Monitor then sends a query to the print device. Based on the SNMP values that are returned, the device details are determined and the appropriate device options are displayed. If the print device cannot be identified, you must supply additional information about it.

If the Additional Port Information Required page is displayed, perform one of the following tasks under Device Type:

Click Standard, click the appropriate device in the list, and then click Next.
-or-
Click Custom, click Settings, specify the protocol settings ( RAW or LPR) and the SNMP status settings that you want to use, click OK, and then click Next.


If the wizard prompts you for the print server protocol, specify the protocol that you want to use, either RAW or LPR.


If the wizard prompts you to select a port, specify the port that you want to use in the Device Port box, and then click Next.


Click Finish, and then click Close. On the Ports tab in the Properties for the printer, you should see that the printer is now set to use the new Standard TCP/IP Port that you just created. The new Standard TCP/IP port is also displayed in the Ports on this server list on the Ports tab in the Print Server Properties ( File > Server Properties from within the Printers folder)


You can then delete the 3rd-party port from the Ports tab within the Print Server Properties.


Repeat these steps for all printers that are using a 3rd-party Port Monitor.


After moving all printers to the Standard TCP/IP Port Monitor, we can delete the 3rd-party Port Monitor’s Registry key under the Monitors key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Monitors
Remove All Other 3rd party Monitors
For any other 3rd party Monitors that are identified under the Monitors key and are confirmed to NOT have any printer ports listed under the Ports subkey for the Monitor, we will need to perform the following 2 steps

Identify printers configured to use the 3rd party Monitor.
Delete the reference to the Monitor for that printer.
Delete the Registry key for the 3rd party Monitor.

Note: The Client Printer Port is the Citrix Metaframe Monitor used for autocreated client printers in Terminal Server sessions. Do not remove this Monitor unless it is confirmed to be related to the problem:

You can then perform the steps above again in smaller steps, stopping and starting the Print Spooler service more frequently, to determine if a specific component is required. If so, skip the removal of this component and continue removing the other 3rd-party items.
Note: If the problem is easily reproducible, you may also individually remove the 3rd-party Monitors to try to narrow the problem down to a particular Monitor. This procedure will take more time and may require restarting the Print Spooler service multiple times.
Remove 3rd-party Print Providers
Remove 3rd party Print Providers by deleting the 3rd-party providers in the following Registry key:

Additional steps to be done

Check the Spool folder to see if there are any old files in the folder. When printing is working properly, the files in the Spool folder are deleted as the jobs are printed. The default Spool folder is:

systemroot\System32\Spool\Printers
The Spool folder location can be confirmed by checking the DefaultSpoolDirectory Registry value in the following Registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Printers
Move any old files that are in the Spool folder to see if the problem still occurs. Corrupt files in the Spool folder can cause Print Spooler service problems. You may need to stop the Print Spooler service to move the files from the Spool folder.

The Print Spooler service is, by default, dependent only upon the Remote Procedure Call (RPC) service, RPCSS. To confirm the Spooler dependencies, check the DependOnService value in the following Registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Spooler
Confirm that the dependent services are started. If there are any other dependent services listed, in addition to RPCSS, edit the DependOnService Registry value to remove all dependencies except RPCSS.

Configure the installed antivirus application to exclude scanning the Spool folder. There can be contention between the antivirus application and the Print Spooler service that may cause intermittent printing problems.

If still issue persists we need to collect ADPlus crash dump of print spooler service. ADPlus is a tool that will allow us to get a memory dump from a process that is giving you problems.
To get this tool, please install the “Debugging Tools for Windows" from http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/devtools/debugging/installx86.mspx
Once these tools are installed, do the following:
1. Create a directory called c:\adplus
2. Open a command prompt and change to the directory where you installed the debugging tools.  By default, this is c:\Program Files\Debugging Tools for Windows
3. Type the following: " cscript adplus.vbs -hang -pn <mmc.exe> -o c:\adplus”
4. Do not interfere with the windows that is opened, just let it run minimized.
5. You will not be able to log off the system while you are monitoring.
6. When the crash occurs, please zip and send me the contents of the c:\adplus directory.

By default Meego 1.0 does not support the wireless broadcom chipset from the dell mini 9. I will explain how you can install Meego as netbook OS for your mini 9 with wireless :)

First download Meego
Then use Win32DiskImager.exe to create a bootable USB stick with the Meego image
Install Meego
Use the following procedure to fix the wireless:

$ sudo yum install rpmdevtools
$ sudo yum groupinstall “Development Tools”

Professor Layton and the Unwound Future very slow

I downloaded the Professor Layton and the Unwound Future from the pirate bay (because the game isn’t release in the netherlands yet :( ) but the game was running very slow. I use a EDGE DS Card for my backups firmware version 4.41. I downloaded the latest version from http://filetrip.net/c1530-EDGE-Series.html.
After I replace the version with 1.50 everything was running smooth :)

From time to time, I want to copy just the minimum files for a VMware virtual machine: the two .vmdk files and the .vmx file. After moving those files to a new location or deleting a snapshot file, attempting to boot the virtual machine returns the following error message:
Cannot open the disk ‘XXXXXX.vmdk’ or one of the snapshot disks it depends on.
Reason: The system cannot find the file specified.

Today is was time for a new Wordpress skin/theme. I search the default wordpress themes but without success. Then I tried Artisteer. I used it for a Joomla theme once and it is very easy to create nice looking theme for Wordpress, Joomla and Drupal.

After you removed the C:\users\someprofile\ you get the error “your user profile was not loaded correctly”. To fix this start regedit go to: HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList search the currupted profile and remove the key.

Migrate my Joomla 1.0.15 to 1.5.x

Yes, I know… My Joomla site is very old. In this article I will write down all my migration steps. The best practise is to create a development environment. I download and install a Debian 5.0 (lenny) OS and installed all the common LAMP, SSH, Samba, PHPMyadmin & ImageMagick  packages. Then:

I Copy the content of my site to my development environment
Edit the joomla configuration.php file and change my physical paths
Upload my database
Check all my joomla modules
set 777 permisions for easy testing ;)
I know from earlier testing that mine Joomla template is not compatible with 1.5. So I download and install Artisteer 2 to create a new template. This software works so easy I created the template with my girlfriend ;) (download torrent)
My Biggest concern is the community builder component and the forum. This are the most important modules so I will upgrade them first.
Backup administrator/components/com_comprofiler/ ue_config.php, remove the CB module and reinstall the latest versions. (note: latest CB have 1.5.10 native support)
My Fireboard version is aleady to the latest version (1.0.5 RC2) :D
Now I will install the migrator tools and follow the 5 migration steps @ http://docs.joomla.org/Migrating_from_1.0.x_to_1.5_Stable
I have installed the migrator and the fireboard ETL’s. After that I create A SQL Dump. Now I must create a new 1.5 install and import everything.
Note: You can now download your SQL dump file and upload it into your Joomla! 1.5 installation to continue the process. Don’t forget to select migration and use the prefix ‘jos_’ (this migrator rewrites your prefix to jos_ even if the sites prefix is different).

\* Step 2: Download administrator / components / com_profiler / ue_config.php

For expose I can install the latest version. The copy the ../components/com_expose/expose/img and xml folders to the new site. That as very easy :)
For the CB Profile pictures I copy images/comprofiler to the new site.

Nintendo give the Opera Wii browser for free now. But when you start the Shopping channel on a softmodded Wii you must update your Wii software first. Because you have a soft/hard mod you don’t want that.

First download this packages (DOPIOS and WiiSCU)
Extract the both apps to the SD\APPS\ folder
Start DOPIOS from the HBC and update/download IOS61 (the one for the shopping channel)
Start WiiSCU from the HBC and update the shopping channel
Now you can start the shopping shopping channel from the main screen.

My Wii has a lot of troubles readings copied disk. I think this is because of a crappy modchip. I will recommend everyone a softmod instead of an chip. If you have hardware troubles with your softmod you can remove all the softmod installations and go back to nintendo and let them repair your harware.
This weekend I’ve connected an old external USB IDE disk to my Wii and dumped  all my ISO’s, Game Copies and original DVD’s  to the disk. Now every thing works fine :D

Hi,
If you want to use mysqldump to back up the database, you can enter the full path when typing the command, or add the path c:\wamp\bin\mysql\mysql5.0.51b\bin to the System variable PATH in Control Panel - System - Advanced - Environment Variables - System variables.
You can make a backup from the command line or a scheduled task in Windows like this, assuming that myusername and mypassword have access to the database mydatabase:

Recently I have setup a NLB IIS site with 2 VM’s in a DRS/HA cluster.  Because of this using unicast mode was not an option (we need to be able to vMotion the virtual machines).  Multicast is also the way VMware recommends setting it up.  From VMware’s site:

Note: VMware recommends configuring the cluster to use NLB multicast mode even though NLB unicast mode should function correctly if you complete these steps. This recommendation is based on the possibility that the settings described in these steps might affect VMotion operations on virtual machines. Also, unicast mode forces the physical switches on the LAN to broadcast all NLB cluster traffic to every machine on the LAN. If you plan to use NLB unicast mode, you must run all members of the NLB cluster on the same virtual switch.

Being a dedicated Firefox user, one of the few things that was still thwarting me was SharePoint.  We use SharePoint internally for a ton of stuff, and it was a drag to have to fall back to that other browser.  SharePoint pages look and work fine in Firefox, but I was having to reauthenticate on every single page, which really hindered my enjoyment of the experience.
I finally figured out how to get Firefox to do NTLM, which means I don’t have to deal with the authentication dialogs, thereby reducing my dependence on IE to one and only one application (Oddpost).

Let’s first start with the most obvious difference: some have R and some have RW. The “R” stands for recordable, while the “W” stands for rewriteable.
The main difference between DVD-R and DVD-RW, or DVD+R and DVD+RW is that the R disc formats can only be written to once, and then it is only readable and can’t be erased for the rest of its digital life. While RW discs are can be written to and erased many times, they are both readable and writeable.

what you need to do is the following:
1. Make sure that syslog doesn’t log kern.debug to a file(check /etc/syslog.conf). if it does, disable it temporarily (better), or stop syslog altogether (worse, because you will eliminate one possible cause of the disk activity)

echo 1 > /proc/sys/vm/block_dump
3. in bash, type (modify to fit your favourite shell):

For Autodiscover, you actually have two options.
1. Repeat the above process, with a new dedicated web site for autodiscover.
The command for a new Autodiscover virtual directory is

That web site can then get its own SSL certificate.
This could be useful if you use two different domains, one for email and one for external facing web services. Autodiscover uses the same domain as your email.

Finaly after using Google (again) I found an emulator that would do the job: VirtualBox. It’s a free emulator with USB support and it runs remarkably faster than the VMWare Workstation. For people who run Compiz-Fusion: VirtualBox in fullscreen allows cube rotation while the cursor is on the VirtualBox-window. I haven’t found a way to do this with VMWare…

This filesystem check is necessary in order to keep your filesystem healthy. Some people advise turning the check off completely, but that is generally not a recommended solution. Another solution is to increase the number of maximum mounts from 30 to some larger number like 100. That way it’s about 3 times less annoying. But this solution is also not recommended. --\* you can get the logical log file name usingthe following command in Query Analizer:

Now execute the following command to shrink the database log to 200MB:
DBCC SHRINKFILE ("logicalLogFileName", 200)
BACKUP LOG "databaseName" WITH TRUNCATE_ONLY
DBCC SHRINKFILE ("logicalLogFileName", 200)
–if it doesn’t work, run the two commands again.
–When done with that, do a full backup of your db as you will have broken your tlog backup chain.

Ik wil deze week de website weer online gooien. Zeker omdat alle carnavals plaatjes straks weer op de website moeten komen natuurlijk ;) Er zal dan gevraagd worden voor een gebruikersnaam en wachtwoord.
Vul dan in bij gebruikersnaam: wipneus en als wachtwoord pim
Zonder dat wachtwoord kun je straks niet meer op de site komen, totdat deze volledig is dichtgetimmerd. Wanneer dit actief is zal ik ook nog ff een mailtje sturen.

Jullie zullen wel denken…. huh waarom is de pagina veranderd in zo’n rare blog….
Mijn collega heeft alle Joomla sites op de webserver geblokkeerd. De oorzaak hiervan is dat er op dit moment verschrikkelijk veel joomla sites gehackt worden die vervolgens allemaal andere joomla sites aanvallen. Omdat er klachten kwamen van andere joomla webhosters is de pagina per direct op non-actief gezet :(
Ik heb me ondertussen al verdiept in een oplossing. De oplossing is de rechten op de site aanpassen, de laatste versie van joomla installeren en een aantal componenten updaten of helemaal uitschakelen. Wat ik sowiezo wil doen is de pagina niet meer publiek maken. Er zal een gebruikersnaam en wachtwoord ingevoerd moeten gaan worden.

Douane weert reuzenkat De douane op Schiphol heeft vorige week een reuzenkat in beslag genomen.
Het gaat om een asherakat, die in de VS is gefokt en door een Nederlands echtpaar is geïmporteerd.
De Algemene Inspectie Dienst (AID) onderzoekt of de kat kenmerken van een wild dier vertoont. Als dat het geval is, is invoer verboden.
De asherakat is een kruising tussen een Afrikaanse serval en een Aziatische luipaardkat. Een volwassen exemplaar kan zo’n 15 kilo wegen en heeft het formaat van een forse hond.
